2016 RSAC New Talent Scholarship winner Gina Walker took part in her first forest event at the Brick and Steel Border Counties Rally in her Citroën C2. Competing as part of the C2MotorsportParts.Com Eccose Challenge, the rally took place in the Tweed Valley not far from Gina’s hometown of Duns.
Richard Simmonds kindly agreed to co-drive for Gina. Richard’s experience and positive attitude was a great attribute to Gina’s first event. The whole day consisted of 45 stage miles over changing surfaces and Gina didn’t disappoint.
She had a few scary moments over the first 2 stages and then things began to click. She said “It’s very different when you have to put all your faith in your co-driver and concentrate on the notes but it began to sink in. I now understand why my mum got such buzz out of this sport”.
A puncture late in stage four and a hold up on the start of stage five gave Gina the time for one quick tyre change with the help from a couple of other competitors.
Over the day Gina’s times were getting faster and the Citroën C2 was singing by the end.
She finished with a beaming smile and a creditable 45th overall out of 97 starters and 2nd in the C2MotorsportParts.Com Eccose Challenge to local lad David Martin.
“I have had a most thrilling day and I have the bug as they say in rally terms, I can’t fault the Citroën C2.
It got me out of trouble a few times and thanks to Graham Mack who kindly built the car, also Hacker and Billy my service crew for the day and last but not least, Richard for keeping me right during the day”.
Richard commented that, “ [Gina] is so enthusiastic and determined. I am disappointed that I am having to missed her next rally in Elgin due to my other co-driving commitments but really looking forward to the Jim Clark in June”.
Gina’s next outing in the C2MotorsportParts.Com Eccose Challenge will be on the McDonald & Munro Speyside Stages on 23rd April 2016.
